How to refurbish an iPhone
iPhone refurbishment is more constrained than Android. Apple's parts pairing means even legitimate component swaps can degrade functionality if you use the wrong parts. This is the 8-step process — what to test, what to replace, what to skip — for resellers refurbishing iPhone 11 through iPhone 16.
Step 1 — Run Apple Diagnostics
Power off, then hold Volume Up + Side button until the Apple logo appears. Diagnostics runs through 50+ hardware checks and surfaces error codes for any failure. Cross-reference codes with Apple's service guide. This is the fastest way to find issues before you spend time on cosmetic work.
Step 2 — Check Activation Lock
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content. If the phone asks for the previous owner's Apple ID, the device is iCloud-locked. Do not proceed — see how to remove iCloud Activation Lock for the legitimate paths (the previous owner has to sign out remotely).
Step 3 — Check battery health
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Anything under 85% should get a new battery before resale. Use Apple's Self Service Repair (now offered for iPhone 12 and later in most US states) for OEM parts that won't trigger the "Unknown Part" warning. Aftermarket batteries are cheaper but the warning lives in Settings forever.
Step 4 — Inspect the screen
Open the camera, take a photo, and pinch-zoom across the entire screen. Tap each corner. Watch for dead pixels, touch dead zones, color shifts. iPhone 13 and 14 had production runs with weak adhesive in the bottom-right corner — flickering at touch is the tell. Replace screens with OEM parts when economical (iPhone 12+ supports True Tone after OEM screen swap; aftermarket disables it).
Step 5 — Test cameras and Face ID
Take a photo with each rear lens (wide, ultrawide, telephoto on Pro models). Switch to video, do a slow pan, watch for focus hunting. Then go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID and re-enroll. If "Move iPhone Lower / Higher" loops, the TrueDepth camera module needs replacement (~$120 part, only viable on Pro models).
Step 6 — Verify carrier lock
Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked. Anything else and the phone is tied to a specific carrier — discount accordingly when reselling. Carrier-locked iPhones resell for 10–15% less than unlocked.
Step 7 — Replace what's broken
Common iPhone repairs and 2026 part costs:
- Battery (OEM via Apple Self Service Repair): $50–$80 + $50 service fee. Aftermarket: $25–$40.
- Screen replacement (iPhone 13 / 14 / 15): OEM $230–$380; aftermarket $80–$140.
- Charging port: $40–$70 for the part; non-trivial install.
- Rear glass: $60–$120 for the part; very labor-intensive on iPhone 12+ (laser-removed sealed back).
- TrueDepth camera (Face ID module): $80–$140 part; locked to original device on some models.
The decision of OEM vs aftermarket affects resale grade. Apple-paired components keep True Tone, accurate battery percentage, and Face ID; aftermarket components show "Unknown Part" warnings that buyers and platforms notice.
Step 8 — Wipe and grade
Final factory reset (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings). Then physically inspect under standardized lighting and grade per your published rubric. Match the listing photos to the actual device — over-grading is the #1 cause of refund requests.
What to skip
Three repairs aren't economically worth it for resale:
- Logic-board repairs — usually cheaper to part out the device than to replace the board.
- Microsoldering for sub-$200 phones — labor exceeds the resale-grade lift.
- "Like-new" makeovers on Grade C devices — buyers paying Grade A prices expect Grade A authenticity, and the cosmetic shop polish doesn't fool experienced eyes.
