Refurbishment guide · AirPods
How to refurbish used AirPods (Pro, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, Max).
The serial-by-serial verification + battery test + case-cleaning workflow that prevents the "mismatched buds" buyer complaint. AirPods Pro and Max specifics included.
Why this guide exists
AirPods refurb is small-form-factor, high-volume work — average refurb time is 15-25 minutes per pair vs. 35-50 for iPhones. The economics work because the per-pair margin is meaningful ($30-$80 for Pro 2, $15-$40 for 2nd/3rd gen) and the volume scales: a small bench can process 100+ pairs per week. The catch: AirPods have three serial numbers per pair (left bud, right bud, case), and mismatched serials are the #1 cause of buyer disputes.
The 3rd gen and Pro 2 (USB-C, 2023) are the resale sweet spot. AirPods Max is a separate workflow — bigger, more like over-ear headphones, with specific ear cup and headband repair paths. This guide covers all four product lines with the workflow forks called out.
Tools and supplies
Calibrated for an operator-bench setup, not a tinkerer’s kit. Buy the right tools once; the cheap alternatives cost more in damaged screws and rounded heads.
- Magnifying loupe (5-10x). For reading serial numbers etched inside the case lid and stems. AirPods serials are tiny — without a loupe, mistakes happen.
- Compressed air canister. For ear-tip-area cleaning and case-interior cleaning. Most AirPods intake has wax/dust accumulation.
- Microfiber cloth + isopropyl 70%. For cleaning bud exteriors and case exterior. Isopropyl is safe on the polycarbonate housing.
- Replacement ear tips (Pro 1 and Pro 2, multiple sizes). Buyers expect a fresh ear-tip set. New tips cost $4-$6 wholesale and add $15-$25 to the resale price.
- iOS device for serial verification (paired to Apple ID). Place AirPods next to a paired iOS device → settings → Bluetooth → tap the (i). Shows all three serials, firmware version, battery health.
- Apple GSX or AASP access. For Apple Care+ status on AirPods. Apple Care+ on AirPods transfers; active coverage adds $20-$40 to resale.
Common airpods issues at intake
What to inspect for before you quote. Each of these can move margin by $30-$150 per device if you catch it at intake instead of discovering it during refurb.
- Mismatched serial bundles. Sellers sometimes ship a case from one pair with buds from another. The detection is immediate — serial check via iOS shows the mismatch. Operator response: either contact the seller to send the missing pieces, or refurb as a "case-only" or "buds-only" listing at reduced price.
- AirPods Pro 1 (2019-2022) static / crackling. A documented firmware/hardware issue Apple acknowledged. Devices manufactured before October 2020 are eligible for free Apple service replacement. Verify per-serial via Apple's service program lookup.
- Battery life degradation on AirPods 2nd gen. After 2-3 years of use, AirPods 2nd gen typically show 60-75% of original battery life. Not user-replaceable — disclose in listing as "expected battery life X hours" based on your test.
- AirPods Max ear cup wear and tear. The mesh fabric on AirPods Max ear cups discolors and pills over time. Apple offers replacement ear cups at $69/pair via repair. Worth it on grade-A Max intake if the ear cups are visibly worn.
- Lost ear-cup magnets (Max only). AirPods Max ear cups are held to the headband by magnets. Sellers sometimes ship without the ear cups attached. Verify attachment before quote completes.
The 6-step refurbishment process
The order matters. Steps 1-2 gate everything: if the device fails the iCloud / FRP / Knox check or has unrecoverable cosmetic damage, you save the parts cost by stopping before Step 3.
- Step 1 — Triple-serial verification. Open the case near a paired iPhone/iPad. Tap the (i) next to the device in Bluetooth settings. Three serials appear: left bud, right bud, case. All three should match the product family (e.g., all three should be Pro 2). Mismatches are flagged and the pair gets pulled from the refurb queue for individual-piece listing.
- Step 2 — Cosmetic inspection. Bud exteriors under bright light: scuffs on the stem, scratches on the mesh, color uniformity. Case: lid hinge tension (Magic Hinge should click closed), exterior scratches, USB-C/Lightning port condition. AirPods Max: ear-cup mesh, headband cushion, slider arm wear.
- Step 3 — Cleaning protocol. Buds: compressed air on speaker grille, isopropyl-dampened microfiber on stem and body. Case interior: compressed air on charging pad recesses, microfiber on exterior. AirPods Max: replace ear cups if visibly worn, isopropyl on headband. Skip ear-tips — those get replaced wholesale before listing.
- Step 4 — Battery + functionality test. Charge case + buds to 100%. Test: pairing speed (should connect within 2 seconds of opening lid near paired device), in-ear detection (audio should pause when bud removed), volume balance (both buds should reach max volume equally), Active Noise Cancellation if Pro/Max (test in noisy room), Transparency mode, Hey Siri response. Note any battery time anomalies vs. spec.
- Step 5 — Ear-tip replacement (Pro models only). New silicon ear tips wholesale at $4-$6 per set. Include all four sizes (XS/S/M/L) or just the most popular (S/M/L). Buyers expect fresh ear tips on used Pro purchases — skipping this costs ~$20-$30 on the resale price.
- Step 6 — Final pairing reset + listing prep. Open case lid, hold setup button on back of case for 15 seconds → light flashes amber then white = fully reset, ready for next owner. Photograph: case exterior (front + back), case open with buds inside, both buds with serials visible (zoom for legibility). Listing language: include serial-verified, ear tips refreshed, battery hours from test, Apple Care+ status if active.

FAQ
Common questions on refurbishing airpods
How do I list AirPods if the serials are mismatched?
List as separate items: "AirPods Pro 2 case only" + "AirPods Pro 2 single bud (right)" + "AirPods Pro 2 single bud (left)". Each lists at parts price. Mismatched bundles are not "refurbished AirPods" — disclosing is mandatory.
Are AirPods Max worth refurbishing if ear cups are worn?
On grade-A intake (everything else clean), yes — $69 in OEM ear cups plus 15 minutes labor adds $80-$120 to resale. On grade-B/C intake, parts-only might be more profitable.
How do I price AirPods refurbs vs. new Apple pricing?
Used AirPods Pro 2 USB-C in grade-A condition resells at ~$140-$170 (Apple new: $249). 2nd gen AirPods resell at $50-$70 (Apple discontinued, was $129). Always price below Apple new — buyers cross-check.
Can I refurb AirPods that fail the Apple Care+ service program coverage?
Yes, but at parts-only pricing. Apple's service program for AirPods Pro 1 static issue covers eligible serials with free replacement; out-of-coverage devices with the static issue go to parts harvest. Verify per-serial via Apple's lookup.
How long does a typical AirPods refurb take per pair?
15-25 minutes per pair for 2nd/3rd gen, 20-30 minutes for Pro models, 35-50 minutes for AirPods Max (if ear-cup replacement). A small bench can process 100+ pairs per week — economics work via volume.
Should I include replacement ear tips on all Pro refurbs?
Yes — buyers expect fresh tips on used Pro purchases. $4-$6 in tips adds $15-$25 to listing premium. Skip and you lose $20-$30 on the resale price.
